Tesla Inc may soon expand its lineup in India with a bigger version of its electric SUV. Reports suggest that the Tesla Model Y L could be launched on April 22.

The move comes after a slow response to the standard Model Y in India. The company is now expected to introduce a more spacious option to attract buyers.

The Model Y L is a long wheelbase version of the regular Model Y. It offers more cabin space and adds a third row of seats. This allows a 6-seater layout, making it more practical for families.

Currently, this version is sold only in China, where it was launched last year. If introduced in India, it is likely to be positioned above the standard Model Y and will come at a higher price.

Tesla’s current Model Y units in India are imported from Shanghai, and the same approach is expected for the Model Y L as well.

Sales numbers for the Model Y have not been very strong so far. Since its launch in 2025, the company has sold around 225 units, which is lower than expected. Reports also suggest that discounts were offered to clear inventory.

In terms of performance, the Model Y L comes with a larger 82 kWh battery pack and all-wheel drive setup. It is claimed to offer a range of up to 751 km in China.

The SUV is also bigger in size. It is longer than the standard model and gets an extended wheelbase, which helps create more interior space.

Features are expected to include powered and ventilated seats, a panoramic glass roof, premium sound system and large touchscreens for both front and rear passengers. It will also support fast charging and include advanced safety features.

If launched, the Model Y L could better match Indian buyer preferences, especially for those looking for more seating and comfort in an electric SUV.
