Maruti Ignis Discontinued in India, New SUV to Replace It

Maruti Suzuki has officially discontinued the Maruti Ignis in India. Production has been stopped, and bookings are now closed across dealerships.

The Ignis, launched in 2017, was known for its unique design and compact size. It received updates over the years, including a safety upgrade in 2019 and a facelift in 2020. However, its popularity slowly declined as buyers shifted towards SUVs and more practical hatchbacks.

Sales data shows a steady drop in demand. The car sold over 48,000 units in its launch year, but numbers fell in recent years. In the last six months alone, sales dropped further, showing a clear downward trend.

One of the main reasons was growing competition from SUV-style cars like the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter. Even within the company, models like the Maruti Swift and Maruti Celerio affected its sales.

The Ignis also lagged behind in terms of features. It continued with basic safety equipment like dual airbags, while many newer cars now offer more advanced safety options. The lack of a factory-fitted CNG variant also reduced its appeal in a cost-sensitive market.

To fill this gap, Maruti is now working on a new SUV, codenamed Y43. This upcoming model is expected to target entry-level SUV buyers and compete with popular options in the segment.

The new SUV is likely to offer better features, improved safety and a more traditional SUV design. It may come with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and could launch by the end of 2026.

With this move, Maruti is clearly shifting focus towards the SUV segment, which continues to see strong demand in India.
